Flight to Costa Rica
In my case, the journey started at Santo Domingo airport. There are no direct connections from the Dominican Republic to Costa Rica, which is why I decided to take a merged flight with Copa airlines. My connection looked as follows: Santo Domingo – Panama – Costa Rica (San Jose).
How long does the flight to Costa Rica take?
My trip from the Dominican Republic to Costa Rica took around 6 hours, changes included. Direct flights from the United States (I picked Miami as a reference point) last less than 3 hours.
If you pick any European country as a starting point, the whole trip is much longer. A direct flight from Madrid to Costa Rica (San Jose) lasts over 11 hours, flights from the Polish capital take around 16.5 hours, and they have at least one change.
The Costa Rica flight tickets price
The price of flight tickets is dependent on the flight date, occupancy and distance. When planning my trips, I look for the flights on Google Flights almost each time. I prepared a few examples of the flight ticket prices to Costa Rica.
Examples of flight ticket prices to Costa Rica:
- Warsaw – San Jose (2 changes): 900 USD, Warsaw – San Jose (1 change): 1200 USD.
- Madrid – San Jose (direct flight): 730 USD.
- Miami – San Jose (1 change): 320 USD.
- Santo Domingo – San Jose (1 change): 310 USD (state of February 2023).
Airports in Costa Rica
Costa Rica has a few airports – the most popular one is in the capital, San Jose.
Other popular airports in Costa Rica:
- Liberia – an international airport, it is located in Guanacaste province. The airport accepts connections mainly from the United States, Canada and Great Britain.
- Limón – an airport located in the province bearing the same name – Limón. The airport offers country flights – to San Jose, country capital, to name one.
Flights to San Jose were the cheapest in my case. It is the most popular international airport in this country.
When going to (not only) Costa Rica, you need to remember about a strict ban on bringing in any kind of food. Each and every fruit and vegetable will be confiscated and thrown out in no time. The airport staff meticulously checks tourists’ baggage, so they will find even the smallest apple.
Why is it forbidden to bring in food to Costa Rica?
The main objective of this ban is the protection of the natural environment and agriculture. Bringing the foreign groceries, e.g. fruits, can cause a transfer of harmful organisms – such as bacteria, viruses, fungus and illnesses that were never present in Costa Rica.
These factors can negatively influence the local ecosystem. Introduction of such restrictions can help to protect local species of plants and animals from competition with those that are not present in Costa Rica.
